<div><span style="font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;">Glossaries of technical words are crucial in standardizing language in<em> </em>situations where original writings on significant disciplinary areas are scarce in local languages and the need for translations is great.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Sri Lanka is one such place.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The main responsibility for glossary compilation of the country has been historically borne by two state agencies, the Department of Official Languages and the Department of Text Publication.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>However, their work has been slowed down in recent times.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>It is in this context that the <em>Patitha English – Sinhala, Sinhala – English Glossary of Technical Terms</em> for the social sceinces and cultural studies (ISBN 955-1493-00-1) was published in 2006.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>It is <span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">edited and compiled by Sasanka Perera and Harindra Dassanayake</span>.   </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;">It stems from the work of the Colombo Institute’s annual refereed journal <em>Patitha</em> that contained a similar glossary from the second volume onwards in response to requests made by readers after reading the first volume.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The present glossary is an expansion of this initial effort, which the institute considers an incomplete and ongoing effort as well as a collective social enterprise.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The Institute considers this an initial effort that needs further expansion in the future.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>A trilingual expanded edition of this glossary is a project that the Institute would like to embark upon once funds are raised.</span></span></p>
